Georgia’s regional coordinating committee for events dedicated to Armenian Genocide Centennial holds session

On March 2, the regional coordinating committee for the events dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide in Georgia held a subsequent, wide-format session at Hayartun Center of the Georgian-Armenian Diocese in Tbilisi, as the press divan of the Georgian-Armenian Diocese reports. RA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Georgia Yuri Vardanyan honored the session with his presence.

The wide-format session began with opening remarks by chairman of the committee, leader of the Georgian-Armenian Diocese, His Grace, Father, Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan who, on behalf of the committee, congratulated RA Ambassador to Georgia Yuri Vardanyan and the entire staff of the embassy on Diplomats’ Day.

The committee discussed the events to be held in Armenia and Georgia and the issue on providing the required accessories for holding the upcoming events in Tbilisi and Armenian-populated areas on April 23rd and 24th.

The chairman of the committee talked about the ecumenical prayer and remembrance events to be held in Georgia and in the sister churches, as well as the consecration of Armenian khachkars (cross-stones) in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide in Armenian-populated areas.

Among the events were the Remembrance Event with a play by the Petros Duryan Armenian State Drama Theater, the screenings of films devoted to the Armenian Genocide, a candlelight vigil in memory of the Armenian intellectuals who were killed during the Genocide, as well as the releases of the Armenian and Georgian versions of Georgia newspaper’s special edition devoted to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

It was proposed to organize the planting of 100 seedlings at the Khojivank Pantheon for Armenian writers and public figures in Tbilisi.

The committee also mentioned the following that would become the main ideology for the pan-Armenian events dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide:

a. Remembrance, Reparation, Condemnation;
b. Gratitude to the states and nations that provided Armenians with shelter, and to the international organizations and countries that have condemned the crime perpetrated by the Turks;
c. Duty to the sacred martyrs;
d. Renaissance of the Mother Homeland and Artsakh and of pan-Armenian initiatives.

The specific schedule of events in Tbilisi and other areas will soon be posted online.

The session ended with a speech by RA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Georgia Yuri Vardanyan, who attached importance to the fact that the remembrance events were going to be large-scale and all-embracing.

The regional committee will hold its next session in Javakhk on March 23rd.
