Parliament of Denmark discussing the Armenian Genocide issue

On January 19, the Parliament of Denmark discussed the draft of the resolution condemning the Armenian Genocide. The resolution is authored by Nikolay Viliumsen (Enhedslisten Party) and Rasmus Nordkvist (Alternativet Party), but the draft was submitted by Nikolay Vilumsen (Enhedslisten) and Rene Gel (Alternativet).

As Anahit Karapetyan reported to Hayern Aysor, nobody denied the Armenian Genocide during the discussion, but most people didn’t want to give a political evaluation. The members of the Liberal Alliance Party and the Dansk Folkeparti Party claimed that the issue shouldn’t be politicized and didn’t encourage the presence of the words “Armenian Genocide” or “We condemn” in the draft, stating that it is up to historians and that the approval of the draft won’t have any positive impact on the Armenians living in Turkey or on Turkish-Armenian relations.

One of the authors of the draft, Nikolay Viliumsen, stated the following: “Years ago, the Parliament of Denmark (Folketing) passed the resolution condemning the Holocaust, and today, we have a Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust. Why can’t we do the same for the Armenians’ issue? Why are we afraid of the Muslim sultan (Erdogan-ed.)?”

During the discussions, there were proposals to revise the text and remove the words “Condemn, Armenian Genocide”, which actually change the essence of the draft. In reality, everything related to the Armenian Genocide is left out of the draft, and instead, the Parliament “criticizes the lack of freedom of speech and press in Turkey, calling for the opening of archives.”

After long discussions, there was no general consensus, and the discussion on the draft will continue on January 26.
