Germany’s Turkish minister on Armenian Genocide resolution: “We expressed our view”

In an interview with the Turkish service of Deutsche Welle periodical, Germany’s Turkish Minister for Migration and Integration Aidan Ozoghuz talked about recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the possible freeze of the Migration Agreement signed between Turkey and the European Union, as reported Ermenihaber.

When told that some German-Turks aren’t able to directly participate in politics due to lack of citizenship and rely on Turkish deputies, but were disappointed after last week’s voting in the Bundestag, Ozoghuz said the following: “I think we, as deputies, expressed our views. Some didn’t participate in the voting, others didn’t even give speeches. We understand that this is a sentimental issue for the Turks, but we can’t expect everyone to support the same position. This topic was accepted after long studies and discussions. You can have a different opinion or criticize, but it’s not right to threaten and offend dissidents.”

The newspaper’s journalist also asked Ozoghuz how she assesses Turkey’s reaction and what the fate of the Migration Agreement will be in that context.

Ozoghuz said Germany treats that agreement the same way as it did, but it’s hard to say what Turkey will do with respect to its commitments, adding that everyone is waiting.

When asked if Germany can find alternatives if Turkey cancels the Migration Agreement, Ozoghuz said Germany wants to stay true to the agreement signed with Turkey, but doesn’t rule out alternatives in case of other developments.
