Angela Merkel to not visit Yerevan on April 24th

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel won’t be participating in the Armenian Genocide commemoration ceremonies to be held in Yerevan on April 24th, as Germany’s Turkish zaman-online.de reports, according to ermenihaber.am. Germany will be represented by Minister for EU Affairs Michel Rot, who is also representing the Social-Democrat Party (SPD).

“I will be the representative of the federal government of Germany at the events commemorating the deportations and killings of the Armenians in Yerevan,” said Rot, without using the term “genocide”.

The source doesn’t mention anything about Germany’s participation in the Gallipoli events in Turkey.

Earlier, the German government, in response to a question from the Lefts Party (Die Linke), said that the participation of Germany’s representative in Yerevan was still being discussed.

When asked if the German government views the massacres of 1915 as genocide, he said it was necessary to create a commission of historians that would examine the issue. He hadn’t used the term “genocide” when giving that answer either.
