Armenian Genocide monument desecrated in France
The monument to the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 has been desecrated in Vilorban, which is located not far from Lyon.
Some of the letters of the inscription have been removed, making the inscription related to recognition of the Armenian Genocide illegible.
The monument was placed by Mayor of Vilorban Jean-Paul Brde on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 23, 2005. This is the second act of desecration against the Armenian community after anonymous individuals drew a Nazi cross on the bust of WWII hero Missak Manouchian a week ago in Marseilles.
The Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations of France has condemned the two acts with a statement in which the Council has viewed the acts as a result of the current Turkish government’s policy of denial since “the fight against recognition of the Genocide is the priority of Turkey’s foreign policy”.
“These two crimes against the community serve as an opportunity for the French-Armenian organization to remind France’s current and former authorities about the commitment that they had expressed to pass a law against denial,” as stated in the statement.
