Turkey calling on Finland to renounce the Armenian Genocide
Speaker of the Parliament of Finland Ero Heinaluoma arrived on May 29 in Ankara to have meetings with Turkish parliamentarians. During private talks with his Turkish counterpart Jemil Cicek, who took the opportunity and told Heinaluoma that the issue of the Armenian Genocide is on the agenda and strictly denied the Armenians’ claims.
Cicek said Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora are making efforts to “confuse the world”, claiming that “the painful events that the Armenians experienced in 1915” were equivalent to genocide. “Armenians continue to lead a policy targeted against the Turks, but it’s very disrespectful to accuse this country with a nonsensical claim of Genocide. As we approach the year 2015, Armenia continues to make efforts to have the parliaments of various countries pass resolutions condemning the Armenian Genocide. I’ll set the record straight and say that Turkey supports the idea of establishing a historical commission. We invite the historians of all countries to come here with evidence, but the parliaments must be left out. Academics and historians should study the history. However, Armenians are afraid of this confrontation. They’re trying to mislead the parliaments of various countries. Turkey expects Finland’s meticulous position on this issue. This is an issue that is creating an obstacle in our relations. On April 24th, Turkey’s Prime Minister issued a statement, and now, Turkey is expecting the response from Armenia and the Armenian Diaspora,” said Cicek.
Finland’s parliamentary speaker said he shares the Turks’ position on the Armenian Genocide and that he also believes it’s up to the historians to study the history.
