Armenia is doing everything possible to help the Kessab-Armenians-Edward Nalbandyan
The statement by the President of the Republic of Armenia on the events in Kessab is evidence of our deep concern. The President has given assignments, and we are doing everything possible to provide the necessary assistance to the Armenians from Kessab. Our representations within UN structures in New York and Geneva and within other international organizations are taking adequate steps. We have also raised our concerns at the international level and in our contacts with nearly 30 countries. Our embassy in Damascus has assignments and is taking adequate steps,” this is what RA Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan informed during a March 26 question-and-answer session with the Government in response to NA Deputy Karen Avagyan’s question on the steps being taken to help the Kessab-Armenians. “Prior to the latest events, Armenians made up nearly 70% of the population of Kessab. Today, nearly 700 families have taken shelter in Latakia. Those who don’t have friends and relatives are staying in the Armenian church of Latakia,” said the RA Minister of Foreign Affairs, adding: “The delegates of the National Assembly have organized a meeting in the yard of the Armenian church today. You are aware that the NA delegation has left for Syria. Today they arrived in Latakia, and the meeting is being held as we speak. I believe in two hours they will return to Damascus where they are scheduled to have other meetings tomorrow. The delegates are accompanied by Armenia’s Ambassador to Syria.
When our delegates return to Armenia, they will tell us what they saw and heard during the meetings. We will continue to not only use our diplomatic channels, but also take advantage of the opportunities to ease the burden and solve the problems facing the Armenians from Kessab.”
