Former Governor of California George Deukmejian passed away in the U.S. at the age of 89. His family reports that Deukmejian passed away at his home in Long Beach on May 8, reported Radio Azatutyun. The Republican was elected Governor of California twice and served between the years 1983 and 1991.
Lawyer Deukmejian held several high-ranking offices. He served as Attorney General of California for 4 years and a Senator for 16 years. The Republican Party in California has declared that George Deukmejian was one of the greatest governors of California in the past century. According to The Los Angeles Times, Deukmejian, who was the son of a family of Armenian immigrants, became the most famous Armenian American political figure in the United States and stated that his parents had escaped from Turkey due to the Armenian Genocide.
