Repressed Armenian intellectuals to be remembered on Day of Remembrance of the Repressed

On March 2, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan received President of the Union of Writers of Armenia and Merited Cultural Figure of the Republic of Armenia Eduard Militonyan. The Minister asked Militonyan about the problems with contemporary Diaspora Armenian literature and touched upon the issues on paying homage to and popularizing Diaspora Armenian writers, organizing events dedicated to their anniversaries and publishing their works.

During the conversation, the sides touched upon the issues on organizing events dedicated to repressed Armenian writers (Yeghishe Charents, Aksel Bakunts, Vahan Totovents, Gurgen Mahari, Zabel Yesayan and others) on the day of remembrance of those writers, in partnership with the Ministries of Diaspora and Culture of the Republic of Armenia and the Union of Writers of Armenia.

After the discussions, it was decided to mark the day of remembrance of repressed Armenian intellectuals and cultural figures on the Day of Remembrance of the Repressed (14 June), as prescribed by the law of the Republic of Armenia.

The sides also touched upon the issues on organizing the joint events dedicated to the 90th birth anniversary of Aleppo-Armenian writer and public figure Toros Toranian.

Importance was attached to the role of Armenian culture and literature in preserving the Armenian identity and helping provide the young generation of Armenians with an Armenian upbringing.
