Raffi Kalfaian: “The advancement of the reparations process isn’t dependent on Turkey’s official recognition of the Armenian Genocide”

The fourth session of the three-day “ARMENIANS AT THE END OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE” workshop organized by the Assembly of Armenians of Europe in the German city of Duisburg was entitled “Genocide and Claims, Clarification and Specification of Claims in the Political and Legal Fields” and was moderated by Dr. Raffi Bedigian and Yervand Khosrovyan, reports the information center of the Assembly of Armenians of Europe, according to Hayern Aysor.

Co-chair of the Armenian Bar Association of France and lawyer Virginie Touche delivered a speech entitled “Armenian Claims in International Law”. In the beginning, Touche touched upon the activities of the Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations of France and went on to talk about the opportunities for raising the Armenian Question in various international courts, as well as the barriers and difficulties.

“Reparations for Genocide: Legal Grounds, Measures and Challenges”-this was the title of the speech by former chairman of the International Federation for Human Rights (F.I.D.H.), lawyer and international law expert Raffi Kalfaian, who explained in detail the ways, measures, terms and opportunities for reparation in international law.

Raffi Kalfaian talked about the need for Armenians to individually and collectively claim their properties from Turkey and emphasized that the advancement of the reparations process isn’t dependent on Turkey’s official recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Kalfaian mentioned that this process requires caution, discretion and full cooperation between Armenia and the Diaspora.

The two speeches were followed by discussions on land and property claims, as well as the legal grounds and opportunities for financial reparations.
