Tessa Hoffman: “The German government is doing the same thing it was doing in 1915 in regard to the Armenian Genocide”
The German government is doing the same thing it was doing in 1915 in regard to the Armenian Genocide. Well-known German genocide scholar Tessa Hoffman made this comment during an interview with “Armenpress”.
Although the German Bundestag has included the issue related to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide in the agenda of its February 25 session, the success of that discussion is questionable. Hoffman links this to Germany’s relations with Turkey, the pivot of which has been the refugee issue for the last couple of months.
“This can be compared to the situation in 1915 when Germany had forgotten all human and humanitarian values for the sake of the German-Ottoman military partnership. The issue is on the agenda of the Bundestag, but I highly doubt that the issue will be discussed. According to German mass media outlets, the German embassy in Ankara has already become involved in the issue related to Turkey’s discussions on the refugee crisis with Germany and the European Union. In this situation, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs will do everything possible to prevent tense relations with Ankara,” Hoffman said. Hoffman regretted to mention that neither the Genocide perpetrated in the Ottoman Empire nor Turkey’s struggle against the Kurds (damage caused to Kurdish civilians) can change the situation.
“In this country, the critics of such a policy are not many in number and are not influential to put an end to all this,” the genocide scholar noted. Hoffman stated that even if the Bundestag holds discussions on the Armenian Genocide on February 25, the success is highly questionable. “It is very unlikely that the oppositional Green Party will receive the necessary support from the ruling coalition, that is, the Conservatives and Social-Democrats,” Tessa Hoffman said. The German Bundestag has included the issue related to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide in the agenda of its February 25 session. On February 25 at 15:45 Berlin time, the political party will deliver a report, which will be presented and discussed for 45 minutes. Leader of the Green Party of the German Bundestag Cem Ozdemir has stated that it’s not simply about the ceremony of remembrance, but the submission of the draft resolution on the Armenian Genocide and discussion on that resolution.
The topic for the first reading is the statement of the Green Party that clearly formulates the events of 1915 as Genocide.
