Almelo celebrates International Mother Language Day and Armenian Scouts’ Day

On February 21, Homenetmen Almelo and the Saint Mesrop Mashtots Armenian Sunday School of Almelo held a grand ceremony celebrating International Mother Language Day and Armenian Scouts’ Day at the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church in Almelo, reports Manuk Mkrtchyan to Hayern Aysor.

The events kicked off on Saturday. On that day, Armenian Scouts cleaned the church, the area nearby and spent the night in the church hall.

The next day, they participated in a Holy Mass, after which the Church hosted a grand ceremony dedicated to International Mother Language Day and Armenian Scouts’ Day. The event began with a prayer and blessing by Father Aren Shahinian from England. Afterwards, Sevan Georgisyan gave a speech in which he noted the importance of preserving the Armenian language, especially in the Diaspora. At the end, he touched upon the activities carried out by Homenetmen.

After his speech, the students of the Armenian Sunday School of Almelo acted in a play devoted to Saint Mesrop Mashtots and recited poems and sayings devoted to the Armenian language.

At the end of the day, bowls of lentil soup made by the scouts were handed to the guests after Father Aren gave his blessings.
