ASALA fighter Levon Ekmekjian was sentenced to death in Turkey 33 years ago this day

Today, 28 January is the day that fighter of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) and avenger Levon Ekmekjian died. As reports ermenihaber.am, the topic of Levon was covered as one of the major events that have taken place on 28 January throughout the years in the article entitled “This Day In History” posted on Dünyabülteni website.
Member of ASALA’s “Khrimyan Hayrik” detachment Levon Ekmekjian was given a death sentencing by the ruling of a Turkish military court on 7 September 1982. The death sentencing was executed on 28 January 1983, and Ekmekjian’s body was buried at the Jebeji Asri Cemetery in Ankara.
On 7 August 1982, Levon Ekmekjian participated in the Karin Operation carried out at Esenboga Airport in Ankara, received an injury and was captured while being in a state of unconsciousness.
Three years ago, the Ekmekjian family appealed to Turkey’s relevant authorities with the request to transfer Levon’s ashes to Paris. Just recently, the appeal was approved, and Levon’s ashes were transferred to Paris.
