German Ambassador: “Today, nobody can deny the historical fact about the events of 1915”

Today, nobody can deny the historical fact about what happened to the Armenian people in 1915, irrespective of whether a process of recognition has taken place in this or that country or not. This is what Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Armenia Matthias Kisler announced during an October 2 press conference, reports News.am.

The diplomat mentioned that if we are to talk about the German Bundestag, it is an independent body that has held many discussions. From the Ambassador’s perspective, the most important thing is the fact that the Bundestag has taken advantage of all the opportunities to ensure a high level of awareness about the issue. “The German government supports the programs that are aimed at establishing and strengthening relations between the Turks and the Armenians. The Turkish society is already aware of what happened to your people,” Kisler mentioned.

When asked what happened and how we can refer to what happened to the Armenian people, the diplomat replied: “We all know what happened in 1915. You are aware that Germany, particularly the Bundestag is discussing the issue. That’s why I refused to go further. Your nation has seen so much suffering that it doesn’t matter what word expresses those sufferings. That’s why I emphasized that the most important thing was the world’s reaction.”

When asked if the political and economic interests with Turkey stand in Germany’s way of officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide, the Ambassador said: “I would refer to that reference as more of a speculation.”
