Three Armenians Elected to the Turkish Parliament

Garo Paylan ran for parliament as the second nominee from the HDP’s (Kurdish Party) third election area in Istanbul. Markar Esayan, an Armenian-Turkish journalist for the pro-AKP daily Yeni Şafak, entered the parliament on an AKP ticket as the 12th candidate from Istanbul’s second election area. Selina Doğan, from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), was elected as the first deputy candidate from the second election area of the CHP’s Istanbul list. Doğan si a lawyer. In addition, Erol Dora, who is a member of Turkey’s Syriac community and a lawyer, was the HDP’s third deputy candidate from Mardin and an incumbent in the legislature.Reports of widespread fraud cast a pall over the historicJune 7 general electionin Turkey, with observers from a variety of parties and civil society organizations claimed to have detected numerous attempts to commit electoral fraud early on Sunday and rumors of wrongdoing spreading on social media. Turkey’s Human Rights Association (İHD) issued a preliminary report on Sunday regarding incidents of electoral fraud during the general election. According to the report, election observers from the İHD were stopped by police from entering polling stations in the provinces of Siirt and Kırıkkale. In yet another incident, 350 ballots were rejected in the eastern province of Iğdır because they did not have an official seal. Some activists claimed that large number of votes in support of the HDP candidates were found burned (see attached photo) or dumped in in the garbage bins. After counting 98% of the ballot boxes, the HDP got 13% of the vote which translates to 79 Members of Parliament. |
