It’s not worth debating like that, we have already eliminated three quarters of the Armenians-Talaat to Ambassador Morgenthau
“Free Voice” newspaper presents its readers with an excerpt from academician Yevgeny Tarle’s book “In the Era of European Imperialism: 1871-1919” in which the author presents the dialogue between Talaat Pasha and US Ambassador Henry Morgenthau in relation to the annihilation of the Armenians. Hayern Aysor presents the excerpt:
“Hearing the untold, horrible stories of the events taking place in Armenia from the most just, rational and objective eyewitnesses, US Ambassador Morgenthau finally decides to go to see Talaat Pasha. The latter categorically refuses to talk about the Armenians. “Are they really Americans?” Talaat Pasha asks Morgenthau. Talaat Pasha responded to Morgenthau exactly how he had responded to a correspondent for the Berliner Tageblatt. “They scold us for not differentiating between the guilty and innocent Armenians. That was impossible because the innocent today may become the guilty of tomorrow.” Talaat Pasha was definitely certain that the Armenian nation would be entirely annihilated, and it was not his fault that, nevertheless, several hundreds of thousands of Armenians were accidentally saved in different parts of the world. “It’s not worth debating like that,” Talaat Pasha told the US Ambassador on one occasion, “we have already eliminated three quarters of Armenians. They are no longer in Bitlis, in Van or in Erzerum.” Talaat Pasha was so certain of that that he obscenely dared (seriously persistent) to ask the Ambassador to have an influence on American insurance companies where many Armenians had life insurance. “Since almost all the Armenians are now dead and don’t have any inheritors, therefore, the Turkish government will need to receive their money. The Turkish government must take advantage of that. Can you provide that service to me?”
German Ambassador to Constantinople Wangenheim, whom Morgenthau addressed with the request to restrain Talaat and Enver and defend the Armenians being annihilated, started using the crudest swear words against the Armenians and categorically refused to do anything for the Armenians. Noyrat, an advisor of the German embassy, filled with indignation over the evil acts committed by Talaat and Enver that had not been told, tried to do something to have an impact on them, but of course, all of the efforts of the embassy’s secondary official were in vain due to the fact that Ambassador Wangenheim overtly supported the annihilation of the Armenians. The German embassy’s maritime attaché Gumman, lover of Wilhelm II, openly declared that the Turks were doing the right thing to the Armenians (Gumman was Emperor Wilhelm’s patron and would send letters to the emperor). Liman von Sanders was determined and expressed his complaint (via his son) to the US Ambassador for reporting the Turks’ atrocities to Europe and the US. Only Karl Liebknecht would gibbet the assassins, but he was powerless.”
