February 21 is International Mother Language Day (video)

Upon the decision of UNESCO, February 21st has been declared as International Mother Language Day and has been celebrated since 2000.

Armenia started celebrating International Mother Language Day in 2005 at the initiative of then Chair of the Standing Committee on Education, Science, Culture and Youth Affairs of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Hranush Hakobyan.

In 2005, February 21st was set as International Mother Language Day on the calendar of state holidays in the Republic of Armenia following an amendment made to the Law of the Republic of Armenia “On Holidays and Days of Remembrance”.

Since its establishment, the Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia has been celebrating International Mother Language Day. This year the events will kick off on February 20 with the title “I Remember and Demand” and will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

On February 20 at 12:00, the opening of the conference entitled “The Mother Language is My Homeland” will be held at the sessions hall of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.

On February 20 at 18:00, a concert dedicated to International Mother Language Day was held at Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall.

February 21-visits to Oshakan and the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts after Mesrop Mashtots, according to the established tradition

11:05-a wreath will be laid near the tomb of Mesrop Mashtots

11:15-students of the school in Oshakan village and Syrian-Armenian youth will perform at monastery in Oshakan

12:15-visit to the Matenadaran, wreath-laying ceremony near the statue of Mesrop Mashtots
