MPs propose to grant Medal of Gratitude to foreign nationals having contributed to Armenian Genocide recognition

A group of Members of Parliament of Armenia propose to grant the Medal of Gratitude to foreign nationals making weighty and significant contributions to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, to the condemnation and prevention of genocide, as well as to the fight against denial. For that purpose, the draft of the Law of the Republic of Armenia “On Making a Supplement to the Law of the Republic of Armenia “On State Awards and Honorary Titles of the Republic of Armenia”” has been submitted to the Government for discussion and is included in the agenda for the February 12 session of the Government. As “Armenpress” reports, the Government has no fundamental objections to the draft law. According to Article 25 of the existing Law, the Medal of Gratitude shall be granted to state and public figures, figures in economy, education, science, culture and other spheres. However, there are also foreign nationals who have made their significant contributions to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, to the condemnation and prevention of genocides, to the restoration of violated rights, as well as to the fight against denial, but they have not been granted an award in the corresponding form, that is, a Medal of Gratitude. For instance, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives Anna Eshoo, Senator Mark Kirk, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives Adam Schiff, Brad Sherman, Howard Berman and Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee Ed Royce, state and public figure Jim Karyjiannis (Canada), George Radanovich (U.S.), former Deputy of the European Parliament Henri Sab and other state, public and political figures have been granted the Mkhitar Gosh Medal for their notable contributions to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. The adoption of this draft law will allow granting the Medal of Gratitude to such figures.
