Large-scale events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide to kick off in March

The climax of the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide will be the events to be held on 22-24 April, but until then and after that, there will be different political, cultural, scientific and educational events in Armenia and abroad. This is what Coordinator of the State Commission on Coordination of Events Dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Vigen Sargsyan informed during a January 30 press conference.

“The first major event will be the international media forum (18-20 March), which will be called “At the Plateau of Ararat” and will be fully devoted to the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. We’re working with the regional committees to have representatives of different influential media outlets of the world attend the media forum,” Vigen Sargsyan said, adding that this will serve as a good opportunity to prepare those journalists to provide coverage of the April 24th events, as “Armenpress” reports.

The global, social and political forum entitled “Against the Crime of Genocide” will be held on 22-23 April and will serve as a platform to discuss not only the Armenian Genocide, but also the crime of genocide. Vigen Sargsyan also touched upon the canonization of the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide by the Armenian Apostolic Church, attaching special importance to the fact that there isn’t any specific number of martyrs to be canonized. On April 23, the world famous rock band System of a Down will give a concert at Republic Square.

According to Vigen Sargsyan, what’s symbolic is that the members of this band have always led a great struggle for recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide and raise the issue of the Armenian Genocide in the arts.

“The organizing committee decided that it would be right, if they make the claim on the day of the 100th anniversary as representatives of the young generation of pioneers for unity and claims. The band will also give 10 big concerts in London, Amsterdam, Belgium, Moscow and several other cities. The concerts will be devoted to the Armenian Genocide and will be called “Wake the Souls”.

The already traditional march with torches will be held on the same day, and many participants are expected to turn out for the event. On April 24, representatives of different nationalities will participate in the major Armenian Genocide commemoration ceremony at the peak of the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex where there will also be speeches by the delegates from different countries around the world. In the evening, there will be a concert featuring performances by representatives of all the countries having recognized the Armenian Genocide or having taken steps in that direction,” Vigen Sargsyan added.

On January 29, the State Commission on Coordination of Events Dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide held its 5th session moderated by Chairman of the Commission, RA President Serzh Sargsyan. The Pan-Armenian Declaration on the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was read at the peak of Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex.
