The Armenian church located in the Menemen district of Izmir has turned into a barn.
The church used to be open until 1922, but now its future is uncertain, as stated in the report by CNNTurk.
Now the residents of the nearby areas demand renovation of the church since it causes a threat to their security. It turns out that the church that is often used as a barn, the inside of which has been robbed and has been filled with garbage, has become a place for drug addicts and alcoholics to gather.
“Nobody knows when they come and go,” one of the residents in the report says.
Another resident recalls that the authorities of Menemen had promised to rebuild the abandoned church, but they never fulfilled their promise.
After the disappearance of the Armenians, for a while, the church served as an armory, but later the authorities didn’t pay any attention to the area so that the building would collapse “on its own”.
