Komitas String Quartet gave concerts dedicated to Komitas’s 145th birth anniversary in Norway and Denmark

On November 20, Komitas String Quartet gave a concert dedicated to the Quartet’s 90th anniversary and Komitas’s 145th birth anniversary at the Norwegian Center for Studies on the Holocaust and Ethnic Minorities in Oslo, reports the MFA news service to “Hayern Aysor”.

The concert was organized by the RA Embassy in Denmark and the Armenian Cultural Association of Norway with the support of the RA Ministry of Culture.

Komitas String Quartet gave a concert at Mogens Dahl Hall in Copenhagen (21 November) and another concert at the church in the Danish city of Guling (23 November).

In the first part of the concert held in Copenhagen, the Quartet performed with famous Danish-Armenian pianist Marianna Shirinyan. The talented musicians of the world’s oldest quartet performed several famous and beloved songs of Komitas and world classics and charmed the audience.

During the concert at the Holocaust Center, RA Ambassador to Denmark and Norway Hrachya Aghajanyan gave a welcoming speech in which he presented Komitas Vardapet and the Komitas String Quartet. He mentioned that Komitas’s music brings Man closer to God and brings God closer to the heart and soul of Man, and that the Komitas String Quartet serves as a powerful force for changes and its music takes one to the disputed past of mankind and brings him to the present, helping him believe in a better future.

Touching upon the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Ambassador Aghajanyan mentioned that the Armenian Genocide will remain a painful memory as long as it remains unrecognized by the perpetrators. “It is each person’s moral duty to remember the dark pages of our history, recognize them and give the highest evaluation of what happened and what may happen if we don’t do the right thing, and as long as there’s a policy of brutality in the world, the door will always be open for the committal of new crimes and genocides,” Hrachya Aghajanyan said.

In his speech, Director of the Holocaust Center Guri Hieltnes mentioned that it was an honor for the Center to host the Komitas String Quartet, which has performed with greats such as Svyatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonid Cogan and many other world famous musicians.

The director stressed the fact that one of the first events that the Holocaust Center organized after its establishment in 2006 was devoted to the Armenian Genocide.
