Turkish-Armenian journalist calls for correct evaluation of Turkey starting to confront its past
Famous Turkish-Armenian journalist, publicist Markar Yesaian has written an article touching upon Etyen Mahcupyan ?s appointment as Senior Advisor to Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
According to ArmenPress, in the article published in the Daily Sabah, the Armenian journalist mentions that this event sparked many reactions in the social media and in the oppositional presses. “The opponents’ main argument is that, by appointing Mahcupyan as senior advisor, the Turkish government is taking a more functional step in its strategy on denial of the Armenian Genocide. The opponents claimed that Mahcupyan fell in the trap and assuming that office was a sign of weakness,” Yesaian writes.
However, the author notes that the Armenian communities of the Diaspora might not be aware of Turkey’s domestic policy and the dynamics of the struggle for power within the country that have been subject to the policies on denial and isolation for a century.
“It would be naïve to say that the government thinks the issue can be solved by expressing condolences for the events of 1915 and with the latest appointments since the Armenian Cause is not an urgent issue for the Turkish government.
The government could prolong this issue for years, based on Turkey’s denial policy and geopolitical significance, Yesaian mentions. According to him, there is a need to give a correct evaluation of the fact that Turkey has started confronting its past. It’s important for the Armenian Diaspora to understand the situation in Turkey and avoid those who wish to take advantage of their pain and use it as an instrument.
