Today is Armenian Press Day

October 16th is Armenian Press Day.

By the decision of the Government of the Republic of Armenia of 22 April 2004, October 16th is marked as Armenian Press Day. The first Armenian print media, Azdarar magazine, was released in Madras on October 16, 1794.

Azdarar was released in Armenian once a month (October 1794-March 1796). The magazine was published by Harutyun Shmavonyan and was issued in 18 volumes. In addition to news, the magazine also included fiction, translations and historical works.

It should be mentioned that the first Armenian newspaper was released in the Armenian Diaspora where even today there are many devoted media representatives and people who preserve the Armenian identity through the media. “Hayern Aysor” congratulates its colleagues in Armenia and the Diaspora and wishes Armenian media more achievements and several occasions to take pride in the media.
