On October 14, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan received President of the International Association for Armenian Studies, Head of the Center for Armenian Studies of the Faculty of Literature at the University of Geneva Valentina Calzolari, who is of Italian descent.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the issues in Armenology, particularly the 13th Conference of the International Association for Armenian Studies, which was considered an important step from the angle of development of Armenology and exchange of academic information. An agreement was reached on further collaboration and on organizing a competition for the best works by Armenologists.
This highly prestigious international association was founded in 1981 by Armenologists Michael Stone (Head of Chair of the Armenian Studies Program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) and Jos Weitenburg (Head of the Armenian Studies Program of the Comparative Linguistics Section of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Leiden). The Association consolidates over 400 Armenologists and representatives of the adjacent fields from more than 20 countries, including Armenia since 1988). The leading forces of the centers for Armenian studies within European universities, that is, foreign and Armenian academics lie at the core of the Association.
One of the main goals of the Association is to promote the development of Armenology in all areas, sum up the results of the latest studies and put them into circulation, as well as organize the exchange of experiences between field experts.
The Association has established contacts with the centers for Armenian studies in different countries around the world, including with the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts after Mesrop Mashtots (Matenadaran).
The International Association for Armenian Studies (AIEA) held its 13th Conference in Yerevan in association with the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts after Mesrop Mashtots (Matenadaran) on 9-11 October 2014.
The conference was important in that for the first time in the history of the AIEA, it was held in Armenia, which served as a good opportunity to consolidate academics and Armenologists from different European universities in the cradle of Armenology.
