U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee passed FY15 for assistance to Artsakh

The Armenian National Committee of America reports that on Thursday, June 19th, the U.S. Senate’s Appropriations Committee passed the FY15 foreign aid with 25 “for” and 5 “against”. With this, the U.S. will continue to provide assistance to Nagorno-Karabakh.

The ANCA has offered to help those who have suffered from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict with a relevant amount and with a call for a peaceful settlement of the conflict. The amount to be provided to Artsakh is undecided.

Nagorno-Karabakh is one of the seven countries receiving help from Europe, as well as South and Central Asia, and this was particularly mentioned during the Senate’s discussion.

The Senators approved the amount to be provided to Armenia proposed by President Barack Obama (20.7 million dollars for Armenia’s economic development, 1.7 million dollars in military assistance and 600,000 dollars in trainings for Armenian servicemen). Obama also offered to maintain the equality of U.S. military assistance for Armenia and Azerbaijan.

During a speech in front of the Senators, Head of the ANCA’s Management Affairs Kate Nahapetian underlined the fact that Artsakh has to receive at least 5 million dollars in assistance and that Armenia has to receive 40 million dollars. Nahapetian added that trade and investments have to grow parallel to Armenia’s economic assistance. Nahapetian also stressed that at least 10 percent of the assistance for Georgia should be provided to the Armenians of Javakhk.
