Case of Armenian soldier murdered in Turkey has been included in book about suspicious deaths

Journalist for the Turkish Radikal newspaper Ismayil Saemaz has released his new book about suspicious deaths.

The book is about the trials for 15 registered cases of deaths caused by beating, use of weapons, explosions and suicide and also addresses the trial for the case of the death of Armenia serviceman Sevak Shahin Balekch.

The book also includes an interview with the parents of the Armenian soldier murdered on April 24.

The Balekchs claim that their son was killed on the ground of being Armenian and that the date (April 24th) was not selected by chance.

Sevak’s mother, Ani Balekch says she felt like a foreigner in Turkey when the murderer was sentenced to 4 years and 5 months. “This means that we’re not considered full-fledged citizens here,” said the mother.

She also mentioned that prior to military service, Sevak hadn’t had any problems with his Armenian identity and that she and her husband weren’t afraid of sending him to the army. “We never discussed politics at home. We were only afraid of terrorist acts.”

Sevak’s parents also talked about the negative attitudes and violence against their son during military service.

Sevak’s father, Garbis Balekch said he had believed in the version that his son’s death was caused by an accident as long as he hadn’t seen the scene of the crime.

“It was Easter that day. It was a coincidence. Easter and April 24th had coincided. Sevak was an Armenian killed on April 24th. He was in an appropriate place,” says the mother, claiming that an Armenian had to be killed on that day to make others afraid.
