The events dedicated to the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Cairo began with the traditional candle-lighting ceremony and the screening of the film Orphans of the Genocide at Husaber Club on the eve of Apr. 23. Afterwards, as a symbol of the rebirth of the Armenian nation, Primate of the Egyptian-Armenian Diocese, Bishop Ashot Mnatsakanyan and RA Ambassador to Egypt Ashot Melkonyan planted a tree in the yard of the Club.
On Apr. 24, Divine Liturgies were served and Requiem Masses were performed at the St. Gregory the Illuminator Church in Cairo, the St. Poghos Petros Church in Alexandria and the St. Teresa Armenian Catholic Church in Heliopolis in memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide. Bishop Ashot Mnatsakanyan and Ambassador Melkonyan laid wreaths at the cross-stone in the yard of the St. Gregory the Illuminator Church along with the leaders of community organizations and several members of the Egyptian-Armenian community.
On the same day, a seminar devoted to the Armenian Genocide with the title “We Remember the Year 1915” was held at the central headquarters of Egypt’s influential “Free Egyptians” political party. The keynote speakers were the party’s secretary general Mahmud Al-Alali, genocide expert Muhammad Refat Al-Imam, international law professor Ayman Salama and member of the Egyptian-Armenian community Armen Mazlumian, who talked in detail about the Armenian Genocide, the need for international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the inadmissibility of Turkey’s denial policy. The participants of the seminar also listened to the RA Ambassador’s welcoming remarks in which the Ambassador expressed gratitude to the leaders of the “Free Egyptians” Party for their recent statement condemning the Armenian Genocide. The event attended by several members of the “Free Egyptians” Party, public and political figures, journalists and representatives of the Egyptian-Armenian community included the screening of a short video devoted to the Armenian Genocide, reports the RA MFA press office to “Hayern Aysor”.
