Turkey’s involvement in the events taking place in northwestern Syria and the Armenian-populated town of Kessab remind Armenians of the dark pages of Armenian history, that is, the Armenian Genocide perpetrated in the Ottoman Empire in 1915, reports The Wall Street Journal, according to Lebanon’s Aztag Daily.
On Sunday, Syrian-Armenians expressed their anger over the Muslim extremists’ actions that helped them take control of Kessab and put the lives of its Christian residents at risk. Armenians have left Kessab with the hope that Bashar Al-Assad’s regime will be able to defend his and the Armenians’ interests.
“The Turks are fighting against us once again, but this time, it’s unacceptable. The genocide continues in Kessab. May God be with those who are protecting the beautiful town of Kessab,” a resident of Kessab wrote on his Twitter page.
“The people of Kessab have been taken out of their homes and have settled in the Armenian Church of Latakia where they receive food from the local Armenians,” an Armenian student of Kessab wrote. The student currently lives in the United Arab Emirates, and his family has left Kessab.
“The place where we used to spend our summers has turned into a zone for military operations. The Syrian army is doing everything it can to save Kessab. The only good thing is that the people of Kessab, including my family and friends were able to save themselves on time. They’ll definitely be left homeless after the war,” said the student.
