Exhibition dedicated to the Near East Relief Society

As already informed, the ANCA-Western Region will be organizing a series of meetings and events dedicated to the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and will be advocating the Armenian Cause in Sacramento, California this year as well.

Every year since 2002, Armenians from all cities of California gather in Sacramento to join the Armenian National Committee, California State Assembly and Senators in commemorating the Armenian Genocide and discussing several issues concerning the Armenian community.

Alongside the events and discussions, there will also be an exhibition dedicated to the Near East Relief since the Armenian National Committee has decided to organize a series of events ahead of the Armenian Genocide Centennial and aimed at honoring the Near East Relief for its role in saving the lives of more than 1,000,000 Armenians, including 134,000 orphans.

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee-Western Region Ellen Asdrian informs that the Near East Relief has provided an unprecedented amount of assistance to the Armenians and expressed gratitude to the Assemblyman for accepting the Armenian National Committee’s offer to focus on the Near East Relief and the Americans’ generosity through the Near East Relief Society.

Let us mention that in September 1915, paying heed to U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Henry Morgenthau, President Woodrow Wilson urged Congress to find ways of assisting the Armenians who had fell victim to the massacres perpetrated by the Turks, and this led to the establishment of the Near East Relief Society, which managed to raise 117,000,000 dollars (currently about 2.7 billion dollars) for humanitarian assistance. Through orphanages in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and other countries, the Near East Relief Society managed to save hundreds of thousands of orphans who were eyewitnesses of the Armenian Genocide thanks to donations from the Americans. The group of participants of the ANCA-WR event will leave Los Angeles on Sunday, April 6, 2014 and will return on the evening of Monday, April 7.
