Joëlle le Morzellec: “I know many French-Armenians who play a huge role in France”
“Hayernaysor”’s interview with Rector of the French University in Armenia, participant of the International Conference on “The Prospects of Diaspora in the Globalizing World”, Joëlle le Morzellec
Joëlle le Morzellec: This conference was very important in that it gave the opportunity to examine the main axes that exist between Armenia and the Diaspora. The conference was of higher value with the participation of the representatives of different countries and the ambassadors accredited to Armenia since they have certain experience in working with the Diaspora. The Italian experience was interesting. Today many Italians live in different corners of the globe and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the U.S. and Armenia Bruno Scapini gave a substantial presentation of that experience. Each of us can draw important conclusions for our respective countries through the exchange of experience of different countries,
“Hayernaysor”: Mrs. Morzellec, France has a large Armenian community. How would you describe it?
J.M.: You are right, France does have a large Armenian community and I would describe it with two elements. On the one hand, the community is very engaged in French society. On the other hand, it has been able to preserve its national image and traditions. It is a community that places importance on education and does everything possible for children to receive the best education. It is a community that has achieved great heights in France. Most Frenchmen view Armenians as Frenchmen and know about their origin. Another important factor is that we have the same religion, are Christian and have the same family and social values. I am certain that this conference will lead to results. RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan has the desire to take concrete steps and the French University in Armenia is ready to assist the minister in all her initiatives.
“Hayernaysor”: What have French-Armenians given France?
J.M.: I think the Armenian community has been able to preserve its culture and develop French culture through its national culture. French-Armenians are in theater, cinema, culture, trade and other spheres. A common view is that Aznavour is the most famous French-Armenian. I share that view, but I can also list the names of many other people who play a huge role in France.
