Monument to Soghomon Tehleryan unveiled in Marseille

On June 23, at the initiative of the Coordinating Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF) in Southern France and the district council of the 6th and 8th District of Marseille, a monument to Tehleryan has been unveiled at Soghomon Tehleryan Square of Marseille. The monument was sculpted by Tavit Youzani. Among the attendees of the opening ceremony were Consul of the Republic of Armenia in Marseille Ruben Kharazyan, Head of the 4th and 5th District Marin Poustolineau, representative of the head of the regional council, Mrs. Campanella, members of the city council, representatives of the local Armenian community and others.

Hayern Aysor, citing Nor Harach, reports that Yves Moren gave opening and welcoming remarks, which were followed by a speech by young president of CCAF Southern France Oreli Pryuna, who touched upon the Armenian Genocide perpetrated in the Ottoman Empire and talked about the historic verdict that the court of Berlin reached in June 1921, acquitting Soghomon Tehleryan and reaffirming, with that verdict, the honor of the people that had been disrespected for centuries. In closing, the speaker touched upon the countries that have recognized the Armenian Genocide.

Pryuna’s speech was followed by a speech by Ashkhen Harutyunyan, who won the 28th International Competition of Human Rights Defenders organized by Mémorial de Caen in 2017.

Afterwards, head of district Yves Moren, who also touched upon the verdict of the court of Berlin, stressing that it created legal grounds for Lemkin to coin the term ��?genocide’ and for the Nuremburg Trial. The head of district also touched upon the current state of affairs in Turkey and stated that if people forget the past, then history will automatically repeat itself.

The unveiling of the monument was followed by performances of the French and Armenian national anthems and revolutionary songs by a junior choir.
