Scott Avedisian is one of the 10 most prestigious U.S. mayors

Armenian American politician and Republican mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island Scott Avedisian is considered the longest running mayor since he has been the mayor of Warwick for the past 17 years.

Hayern Aysor, citing rusarminfo.ru, reports that the 52-year-old mayor of Warwick is a descendant of Armenian Genocide survivors. He was born, raised and has dedicated his entire professional career to the second largest city of Rhode Island.

Avedisian studied in Providence, Rhode Island and continued his studies at Roger Williams University and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at the University of Harvard.

In the early 1990s, Scott Avedisian returns to his hometown where he is elected a member of city council and serves for nearly 10 years.

In 2000, Scott Avedisian was elected mayor of Warwick for the first time. At the time, he also became not only the first Armenian to become the mayor of an American city, but also the youngest mayor in the State of Rhode Island.

The success of his first term served as a guarantee for the next elections, and in 2011, The New York Times included Scott Avedisian among the 10 most prestigious mayors.

The key to Avedisian’s success is that he manages to garner the most votes in all the precincts of Warwick, and the recent elections were no exception. On August 1, 2017, Avedisian garnered 65.1% of the votes and won the mayoral elections once again.

Scott Avedisian is an active member of the Armenian community of Rhode Island and often makes calls for recognition of the Armenian Genocide. In April 2017, the House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island passed a resolution condemning the first Genocide of the 20th century.
