Garo Paylan: “If we don’t talk about it, we will repeat the same mistakes”
The package for amendments prohibiting talks about the Armenian Genocide in the Turkish Mejlis has been introduced to the Mejlis’s constitutional committee for consideration, reported CNNTurk.
The Republican People’s Party and the Republican National Party are against this proposal for amendments.
Armenian Deputy of the Republican National Party Garo Paylan, who was punished for talking about the Armenian Genocide in the Mejlis this year, has referred to the proposal for amendments as “a proposal of the nationalist authoritarian JDP and NPP”.
“As an Armenian in Turkey, I want the parliament of my country to talk about the great misery that my ancestors faced. If Turkey prohibits that, and other parliaments talk about it, this will make me feel sad. Of course, there are parliaments that will use this issue for good purposes and talk about the pain, but certain parliaments will use this issue as a way of exerting pressure on Turkey. I don’t want any parliament to talk about this pain, and this can be prevented only if the Turkish parliament talks about it,” Garo Paylan said, according to Artsakhpress.
Recalling what happened to him in January 2017, he stated that his goal was to warn everyone to stay away from repeating the mistakes of the past. “Today, the people who drafted this law, “linched” me for the term “genocide” and didn’t allow me to participate in three sessions. The resolution being submitted today states this as “an offense against the Turkish nation”. However, we know that the Turkish society is multilingual and multiethnic. This is why it is important to talk about what happened in the Mejlis and call it by its real name. If we don’t talk about it, we will repeat the same mistakes,” he emphasized.
