Sounds of Armenian duduk heard at Catholic shrine in Spain

The sounds of the Armenian duduk were heard during a concert held at the famous Santa Maria de Montserrat Benedictine Abbey in Spain for the first time in the history of the Abbey.

Citing rusarminfo.ru, Hayern Aysor reports that the concert featured performances of the works of Komitas, the psalms of 7th century Armenian scholar Anania Shirakatsi and excerpts from the Liturgy of Makar Yekmalyan by Armenian musicians Hovhannes Ghazaryan and Hovhannes Karakhanyan, as well as Western organ players.

Established in 1025, the Santa Maria de Montserrat Benedictine Abbey is the spiritual and religious symbol of Catalonia and one of the centers for pilgrimages of all Catholics around the world.

One of the national assets of Catalonia is the 12th century statue of the Holy Virgin with Baby Jesus in her hands. It is kept at the Montserrat Abbey and is the reason why the Abbey has become one of the places for pilgrimages in the world. Due to the golden, brown clothing, the 95-centimeter statue is referred to as “the Black Madonna”. The Catalonians refer to it as “La Morenata” (“The Brunette”) with affection.
