Two-thirds of Aleppo’s population has left Aleppo since the war

Aleppo has been in a water crisis for nearly five days now. This is what spokeswoman of the Syria-based Emergency and Recovery for Syrian-Armenians NGO Maria Kaprielian said during an October 26 press conference. According to Kaprielian, Aleppo has also been in a power outage for the past four months, but residents of some districts have installed power generators. However, they pay a lot of money to have electricity for 10 hours a day.

“Today, there is no district in Aleppo that is safe. The most Armenian-populated Nor Kyugh district of Aleppo has been shelled the most recently,” she said.

Kaprielian stated that there are currently 29 Armenian schools in Aleppo that are free-of-charge.

According to her, two-thirds of the population of Aleppo has left the city since the war and only one-third of the population is surviving in Aleppo. According to Kaprielian, most of the people leave for Canada and European countries, particularly Sweden and Austria. There are as many people leaving for Canada as there are people leaving for Armenia, but in many cases, Syrian-Armenians leave for Canada after moving to Armenia and failing to adapt.

When asked if there are Syrian-Armenians who wish to visit Armenia now, Kaprielian said: “There are people who have the opportunity to leave the country, but stay because they believe Syria is their home. There are also people who wish to move to Armenia, but don’t have the opportunity. Such people are provided with assistance. Today, our goal is to organize the immigration of Syrian-Armenians to Armenia.”

Describing the situation created in Syria, Editor-in-Chief of Lebanon’s Aztag Daily Shahan Kandaharian stated the following “What is happening in Syria today is the localized version of a world war in the 21st century since superpowers are entangled in the Syrian issue at the highest level, and this has an impact on the instability in the country.”

Kandaharian had trouble predicting anything and only stated that things will remain the same.
