Foreign media covering Pope’s use of the term “genocide” in Yerevan

Articles about the fact that Pope Francis used the term “genocide” to describe the events of 1915 have appeared on the headlines of foreign presses.

“Pope Francis has described the mass killing of Armenians under Ottoman Turkish rule in World War One as “genocide”, repeating a phrase that prompted Turkish anger last year,” wrote BBC immediately after the Pope’s speech at the residence of the President of the Republic of Armenia. The Pope stated the following: “This tragedy, this genocide, has unfortunately marked the start of a sad series of great catastrophes of the last century.”

“Pope Francis invokes magic word ?genocide’ on day one in Armenia”-writes CRUX, as reported Artsakhpress.

Associated Press, Reuters, ABCNews, Swissinfo and several other media outlets immediately cited the Pope’s speech. International news agencies say it should be mentioned that the Pope deviated from the text of the speech that had been previously prepared and distributed to media representatives in advance.

Turkey still hasn’t responded to the Pope’s statement.
