Turkish MFA responds to Obama’s April 24th address
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to U.S. President Barack Obama’s annual April 24th address. This year, the President used the phrase “Mets Yeghern” (Great Catastrophe) instead of ?genocide’ again.
As reported Milliyet, in its written statement, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the U.S. government to show an impartial approach to the issue of genocide. According to the Turkish MFA, Obama’s statement on 1915 is based on a unilateral presentation of the painful events that took place during the years of WWI.
The statement states that Turkey is sincerely showing that it wants to build a future of peace hinged on the experience that the Turkish and Armenian nations have in living together for centuries. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes it is painful that friendly and allied countries encourage the circles that support the deepening of clashes instead of supporting the above mentioned call. According to Ankara, to this day, nobody has benefited from making efforts to turn the sufferings that have taken place throughout history into a political instrument.
“Thus, we call on the U.S. government to show, by assessing based on remembrance of the historical facts fairly, an impartial, reasonable and constructive approach that takes into consideration the sufferings of all parties,” the statement reads.
