ANC Netherlands expects clear position on Armenian Genocide from Dutch government

A protest and commemoration ceremony will be held in The Hague ahead of the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 23. This is what President of the Federation of Armenian Organizations of the Netherlands and President of the Abovyan Cultural Union Mato Hakhverdyan told “Armenpress”. According to him, concerts and commemoration ceremonies will also be held in other cities of the Netherlands.

“The Parliament of the Netherlands has expressed its position on the Armenian Genocide, but we can’t find that position in the statements of the Government. It is important for us to have the government also express its position on the Armenian Genocide. Government officials always play word games and don’t want to specify. We would like the government to continue with the policy that the parliament has adopted. The government always tries to apply various diplomatic tricks, saying ?Armenian tragedy’, which doesn’t correspond to the content of the resolution adopted by the parliament,” Mato Hakhverdyan said. According to him, the Armenians, Turks and Kurds of Holland will hold a conference on April 16. “Of course, the Turkish and Kurdish participants will be the Turks and Kurds who recognize the Armenian Genocide. The goal of the conference is to establish relations and dialogue between the parties,” Mato Hakhverdyan said. There will also be another similar event.

In particular, the Armenian National Committee of the Netherlands and the government agency of the Netherlands for social affairs will be holding a conference with Turkish organizations with the purpose of discussing issues related to the consequences of the Armenian Genocide. On December 21, 2004, the Parliament of the Netherlands adopted a decision on recognition of the Armenian Genocide. In 2015, the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Netherlands adopted a decision by which importance is attached to general consent of Turkey and Armenia on their history.

According to the decision, the government has been assigned to continue to call on the Turkish government to convey new impetus to the rapprochement with Armenia and seek terms for reconciliation with the Armenian government in line with the decision adopted by consensus in 2004, bilaterally and in the context of the EU.
