Turkish Mejlis has three Armenian deputies based on election results
Based on the preliminary results of the Turkish parliamentary elections, three Armenian deputies representing Turkey’s top three political parties will be represented during the sitting of the 26th convocation of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
Two Armenian candidates were elected deputies in the 2nd precinct of Istanbul. The candidates are Istanbul-Armenian journalist Markar Esayan from the ruling Justice and Development Party and lawyer and the first woman deputy Selina Dogan from the Kemalist Republican People’s Party.
Garo Pailan, who is one of the most active Armenian figures in the Armenian community of Istanbul and was nominated by the pro-Kurdish Democratic Party of Nations, was elected in the 3rd precinct of Istanbul. As in the sitting of the 25th convocation, the Turkish Mejlis will have three Armenian deputies in the sitting of the 26th convocation. The estimates have already been made for most of the polling stations during the snap parliamentary elections in Turkey.
Based on the results of 99.58 percent of the polling stations, the majority of votes (49.41 percent) were cast for Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s Justice and Development Party. The oppositional Kemalist Republican People’s Party (HDP) garnered 25.38 percent of the votes (134 deputies), the Nationalist Movement Party garnered 11.93 percent, (41 deputies) and the pro-Kurdish Democratic Party of Nations garnered 10.70 percent (59 deputies).
