Belgium’s Socialist Party submits draft resolution on Armenian Genocide
On July 2, the oppositional Socialist Party of the Lower Chamber of the Parliament of Belgium submitted a draft resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. With this resolution, the authors of the draft plan “to express their clear position on the Armenian Genocide” on behalf of the Socialist Party of Belgium and all of the party’s delegates and contribute to the reconciliation between the Turks and the Armenians, reports the Belgian La Libre newspaper, according to armeniangenocide100.org.
According to the draft resolution, the House of Representatives must call “the tragic events of 1915-17” ?genocide’, for which the Young Turks are responsible. However, it is also mentioned that the Parliament’s recognition doesn’t refer to the legal consequences.
The adoption of the resolution “would be a big political step to recognize the Armenian massacres with their nature and peculiarities, compatibility with the provisions stated in the 1948 Convention on the Crime of Genocide”, as stated in the draft. The draft resolution also calls on the national and international tribunals to approve their position on the issue.
According to the newspaper’s website, the draft resolution has been signed by four deputies of the Socialist Party’s faction, including Ozlem Ozen, who is of Turkish descent.
