ISIS has killed the last Armenian citizen of Syria’s Kurdish-populated city of Kobane, reports the Turkish Radikal, according to ermenihaber.am.
Hagop Tomasian, brother of the last Armenian killed in Kobane, shared the following: “In 1915, thousands of Armenians migrated to Kobane. My grandfather would tell me how hundreds of Armenians were killed on the road. The Armenians underwent many trials and tribulations, survived and settled in Kobane. Over time, they moved from Kobane to Lebanon, Aleppo, Armenia, the USA and Europe. Finally, there were only eight Armenians left in Kobane. We had two churches. We had no problems with the Muslims until the attack of ISIS.”
According to Hagop, in the wake of the attack of ISIS, one of the eight Armenian families took shelter in Urfa, another family took shelter in Hata, another family settled in Aleppo, two families moved to Armenia with passports, and the other three families took shelter in the camp for migrants established by Turkey’s Department for Disasters and Emergency Situations in the Suruc province located on the Turkish-Syrian border.
Prior to the attack, Hagop’s brother had wanted to return to Kobane with his family. To do that, he and his 14-year-old son left to find a job and a house, but Hagop’s brother was killed a week later. Aram, 14, saw how his father was killed and says even though his father was bleeding, he found the strength to warn his son to escape. The deceased was a father of four. The family has no place to go since it doesn’t consider Kobane their homeland. The members of the family don’t have passports, meaning they can’t move to Armenia. Currently, they’re based at the camp in Suruc.
