Armenia isn’t afraid of sharing votes with Australia’s representative at Eurovision: Sydney Morning Herald

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest, Australia’s Guy Sebastian has been given a chance, or as the Sydney Morning Herald reports, according to 1in.am, a “wild card” into the grand final.
But Australian-Armenian opera singer Mary-Jean O’Doherty Basmadjian is also in contention this year, as part of the group Genealogy, representing Armenia. O’Doherty Basmadjian was born in the United States, but her father is Australian and her mother is Greek-Armenian.
“I love my mother’s country so much,” said Mary, who isn’t concerned about the risk of sharing the vote with another Australian. “Everyone should follow their heart,” she said, adding that she was sure Armenia-which like all participating counties, can’t vote for itself-would vote for Australia.”
She said she was also stunned at the Aussie invasion of Eurovision, with buzz surrounding Sebastian’s song, Tonight Again, and informed chatter that it could be a “top three” contender, if not a winner.
This year, Armenians from different continents have come together to symbolize unity. The two semi-finals will be held on May 19th and May 21st, and the grand final will be held on May 23rd.
