Europa Nostra: St. Gevorg Armenian Catholic Church of Turkey is at risk

The Pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage (Europa Nostra) has included the Saint Gevorg Armenian Catholic Church (Red Church) in the list of 7 cultural riches that are at risk. The Saint Gevorg Armenian Catholic Church is located in Mardin, Turkey.

As ermenihaber.am writes, according to Agos Weekly, the Turkish chapter of the European organization has launched a movement for the renovation of the church. Member of the organization, Professor Nuran Zenen Gulersoy informed that the design is ready and that financial assistance was required in order to finish and renovate the church.

Architect Amine Alkan Reis, who has conducted studies at Saint Gevorg Church for a long time, presented the story of the church. According to the expert, after 1915, the church ceased to be used as a church. It is the oldest places of worship in Mardin and dates back to the 5th century. In 1822, when renovating the church, Bishop Hovakim Tazbazyan discovered a note that was written in 420. Based on the information of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, prior to the 19th century, the century has been known as the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Church, after which it has been named the Saint Gevorg Armenian Catholic Church. After 1915, the church has been used as an orphanage and has later turned into an arsenal. After that, the library of the church was burnt.

According to Agos Weekly, renovation will require 6 million Lira. The fund of the St. Gevorg Church of Mardin, which belongs to the church, lacks sufficient funding to cover the expenses. The fund has received help from neither the Turkish Ministry of Culture nor the General Department for Funds and Foundations.
