Turkey to not file lawsuit against Pope

A Turkish court has rejected the lawsuit filed against Pope Francis I. After the Pope’s announcement about the Armenian Genocide, citizen of the Turkish city of Izmir Coskun Isik had appealed to court, charging the Pope with “disseminating slander and hatred”.

As Turkey’s Haberler reports, writes ermenihaber.am, Izmir’s state prosecutor’s office has rejected the lawsuit, mentioning that the defendant is a state leader, has diplomatic immunity and is not subject to persecution.

Let us remind that on April 12, on the occasion of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the leader of the Catholics served a Holy Mass in memory of the 1.5 million innocent victims at St. Peter’s Basilica of the Vatican.  In his sermon, Pope Francis referred to the massacres perpetrated against the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as “the first genocide of the 20th century”.
