Having taken shelter in Lebanon, thousands of Syrian-Armenian refugees have felt on their own skin the pain of deportation that their ancestors felt 100 years ago, Tert.am reports.
Diario Libre newspaper has covered Maggie Melkonian’s story. She remembers how she left Aleppo due to the war two years ago. “Just like our ancestors, we left with nothing,” Maggie recalls.
Maggie, her son, daughter and grandchildren took shelter in the Bourj Hammoud Armenian district near Beirut. However, her husband stayed in Aleppo and refused to leave everything behind like the Armenians did in 1915. “We are experiencing the second Armenian Genocide. Our people are dying once again,” Maggie mentions, painfully.
Everyone in Bourj Hammoud talks about the Armenian Genocide, and the words “I Remember and Demand” can be seen on signs and the walls of buildings.
