Names for the 2014 “Our Greats” Program of the RA Ministry of Diaspora have been decided

Taking into consideration the current global developments that are making countries and nations face new challenges to survive, compete, advance and go on, since 2009, the RA Ministry of Diaspora has been implementing the “Our Greats” Program within the scope of the state policy on the Armenia-Diaspora partnership. The major purpose of the program is to transmit knowledge about the patriotic deeds and the moral lessons of glorious Armenian greats to the generations, as well as instill in the generations the love for the homeland, make them feel like the owners of the homeland and maintain that feeling.
Having knowledge of patriotic Armenians helps solve the issue of preservation of the Armenian identity, helps the youth know about their roots and instills in them a state mindset, contributes to the strengthening of the national identity, as well as to the reinforcement of Armenians and the Armenian education of the young generation.
The following are the names of Armenian greats included in the “Our Greats” Program in previous years: Supreme Patriarch Vazgen I, Charles Aznavour, Alex Manoogian and Kirk Kerkorian (2009); Missak Manouchian, Vardges Surenyants, Boghos Nubar, Brothers Lazaryan, Mkhitar Sebastatsi and Levon Shant (2010); Garegin Nzhdeh, Monte Melkonian, Petros Duryan and Jivani (2011); Hovsep Orbeli, Garegin Hovsepyan, Marshal Baghramian, Sayat-Nova and Garzou (2012); William Saroyan, Arshak Chopanyan, Gevorg VI Chorekchyan, Nikol Aghbalian and Armenia’s chess team (2013).
“Our Greats” for this year are Calouste Gulbenkian, Hovhannes Tumanyan, Komitas, Siamanto and Arshil Gorky.
Through the “Our Greats” Program, homage events (conferences, poetry events, essay contests, concerts, open lessons, book publications, DVD releases, etc.) are held at schools and universities in the Republic of Armenia, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and in the Armenian Diaspora.
Information about the events are sent to the ministry on a regular basis, materials are prepared and posted on “Hayern Aysor” online newspaper throughout the year.
