Brazil’s São Miguel Arcanjo has recognized the Armenian Genocide

The Brazilian city of São Miguel Arcanjo has recognized the Armenian Genocide, reported founder of the Armenian Chamber of Commerce of Brazil Sarkis Karamekian.
“On 21 March, the city passed a law on recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Unfortunately, Brazil still hasn’t recognized the Armenian Genocide by federal law. We are actively working in that direction, and we have only succeeded at the municipal level. We expect laws on recognition to be passed in other cities of Brazil soon,” Sarkis Karamekian said.
According to him, from now on, April 24th is marked as Armenian Genocide Day on the official calendar of the city. The law states that what happened to the Armenians in 1915 is genocide.
The municipal authorities have expressed their support to the Armenian community and stated that they will ensure all the necessary conditions to organize the commemorative events.
The law was passed by the city council and signed by Mayor Paulo Ricardo. The author of the law is MP Jiu Salis Albaki.
Sarkis Karamekian stated that their goal was to place a cross-stone commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide in the city.
