Preliminary results: Ruling party secures absolute majority in Turkish parliament
Snap parliamentary elections are over in Turkey and preliminary results are publicized. “Armenpress” reports that according to the preliminary results publicized by “Anadolu” agency, the ruling party “Justice and Development” (AKP) managed to secure absolute majority of the votes, 49.54%, based on the counting of 93.74% ballots.
This outcome allows the political force led by PM Ahmet Davutoğlu to acquire 317 seats and form a singleparty government (276 seats are required to form a singleparty government). Opposition Kemalist Republican People’s Party (CHK) received 25.15% of the votes (132 deputies). Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) received 11.97% (42 deputies) and proKurdish Democratic People’s Party (HDP) 10.33% (59 deputies). The preliminary results show that the Kemalist party has preserved its seats, instead AKP managed to increase its seats at the expense of MHP and HDP.
Having such a majority in the Majlis, President RecepTayyip Erdoğan can pass the so much desired constitutional reforms, increasing presidential responsibilities. Interestingly, HDP managed to secure more seats than the nationalist MHP. 86.82% of those eligible to vote went to the polls.
