Catholicos Aram I to present claims related to Armenian Genocide in French parliament

At the initiative of the Armenian National Committee of France, the Parliament of France will launch an international conference on “Justice and Elimination of Consequences for the Armenian People” on June 19.

In an interview with “Armenpress”, member of the Armenian National Committee Mourad Papazian said the main issue will be the elimination of the consequences of the Armenian Genocide and the Armenians’ claims. The keynote speaker will be Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia, who will provide details regarding the lawsuit that will be filed to the Constitutional Court of Turkey with the demand for the return of the Catholicosate of Sis. “We should not only be content with recognition of the Armenian Genocide, but should also politicize and formulate the issue of reparations. Francois Hollande’s close one, head of the parliament’s socialist group Bruno Lerou will also be participating in the conference with an extensive speech,” Papazian said, adding that French and Armenian lawyers and political scientists will also be attending the event.

“This is the first step that will be followed by great efforts to present the issue of claims and the principle of reparations to the embassies of different countries,” Papazian said, adding that the conference will end with the adoption of a declaration. During the 5th Armenia-Diaspora Conference last year, Catholicos Aram I of the Great House of Cilicia had said that he was preparing to file a lawsuit against the Constitutional Court of Turkey with the demand for the return of the Catholicosate of Sis. Representatives from Antelias emphasized that if the Constitutional Court rejects their lawsuit and the Turkish government refuses to return the property, the Armenian side will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

Currently, lawyers are working on documents in order to file the claim against the Constitutional Court of Turkey properly and at a high level. The issue of claims is also enshrined in the Pan-Armenian Declaration adopted on the occasion of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide. The slogan for the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide is “I Remember and Demand”, which implies one step forward for the Armenian side in military operations and other steps for claims and the elimination of consequences alongside international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
