The Turks’ massacres against the Armenians and Assyrians

The attempt to annihilate the Armenians and Assyrians in 1915 was an act that was planned and persistently perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, and it continued after the First World War. It was perpetrated through massacres and forceful deportations. Based on studies, there were 1,000,000-1,500,000 Armenian victims. Other Christian ethnic groups were massacred in that period, and according to some historians, that was part of the policy of total annihilation.

The Armenian Genocide is considered the first genocide in modern history. Twenty countries, including Armenia, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Bolivia, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Uruguay, the Vatican and Venezuela, as well as 42 States of the United States of America, the Land of the Basques and the autonomous communities of Catalonia in Spain, the Autonomous State of Crimea in Ukraine, South Wales and New South Wales of Australia and Canada’s Quebec have recognized the Armenian Genocide.

Several international organizations, including the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, the Human Rights League, the World Council of Churches, MERCOSUR Institute for Human Rights Policies and other organizations have also recognized the crime. Some media outlets such as The New York Times, Associated Press and The Los Angeles Times have also recognized the Armenian Genocide.

On June 15, 2005, the German Council passed a resolution that recognized the process of deportations and annihilation of the Armenians and apologized for the position of the Reich.

There are 135 monuments to the Armenian victims in 25 different countries around the world.

April 24th is considered the day of remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. It is also the day of remembrance of the Assyrian genocide and is referred to as “Sayfo”, which means “to kill the Assyrian people” in Aramean. The genocide of the Assyrians took the lives of 500,000-750,000 people.

There are only 3 countries that have recognized the Assyrian genocide, including France, Sweden and the United States of America.

It should be mentioned that the Armenian Genocide and the Assyrian genocide are specially presented in textbooks in Canada.
